Entitled "For a' that", the image above shows David's winning entry in the
"Embracing Our Differences" international art competition
in Sarasota, Florida.
The outdoor art exhibit is intended to demonstrate in a positive way that diversity enriches
our lives; that respect for differences in our thoughts and beliefs elevates the
human experience; and that the active rejection of prejudice and hatred enhances our own freedom.
The Embracing Our Differences exhibit features 39 billboard size images created by artists from around the World.
Their creations reflect their interpretation of the message: "enriching lives through diversity."
Used as an educational, as well as an artistic, experience the exhibit is supported by the
City of Sarasota Commissioners. David's winning entry will be seen by over 200,000 people over this four week period.
The winning entry is a photomontage of two of David's photographs which includes
words from the last verse of the Robert Burns poem - A mans a man for a' that. The image brings together
a portrait of an Imam that David photographed outside a mosque in the slums of Jakarta and
a portrait of an American cowboy, photographed last year at a rodeo in the USA.
David explains, "As I see it, despite our ethnic, economic, religious and cultural differences,
ordinary working people are basically the same the world over. It is only when we get to know each other as
individuals that we begin to build relationships based on our similarities rather than differences."
