"The Kingdom of Fife"
New movie on DVD by Visible Means!
Rich in history and culture, the Kingdom of Fife is a magical place.
This 45 minute movie shows Fife’s natural beauty with a narration full of interesting facts about Fife's wonderful heritage. Also included on the DVD is a short 6 minute movie of Fife with a musical score and an interactive map of Fife with the following scene selections:
St Andrews
We begin with an introduction to the "Kingdom" and hear some of the myths of how Fife got its name, why it is a Kingdom and how Scotland came by its national flag. We see views of the "Old Course" and golfers enjoying the unique atmosphere of "The Home of Golf". But, we also find out about St Andrews and its historic importance as a religious centre and a University town.
The East Neuk fishing villages
This scene shows Fife's beautiful fishing villages including Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Lower Largo. We learn something of the local people, the fishermen and the fascinating history of this part of Fife.
Kirkcaldy
Here we visit "The Lang Toon" and find out about its rich contribution to Fife's industry, commerce and economics.
We hear about Adam Smith. Robert Adam, Michael Nairn and also our current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. We also visit Ravenscraig Castle and Kirkcaldy's Art Gallery.
Falkland
The Royal Burgh of Falkland and its impressive Palace and gardens is shown in this scene illustrated by many illuminating facts about Falkland's history. We find out about Mary Queen of Scots and her fondness for "Real" or "Royal" tennis and we also learn about the origin of the Bruce fountains.
Dunfermline
Here we learn some of the history of Scotland's ancient capital and the reason why we still call Fife a "Kingdom" today, We see the tomb of King Robert The Bruce in Dunfermline Abbey and hear why he is still considered to be one of Scotland's greatest hero's. We also learn about one of the World's richest men, Andrew Carnegie and how, through his philanthropy, Dunfermline Library is now home to the world's largest collection of books and memorabilia of Scotland's famous poet Robert Burns.
Culross
In this scene we visit one of the best preserved 16th & 17th century villages in Europe. We explore the gardens of Culross Palace before going inside the Palace to find out just how important Culross was as as a trading centre. We enter Culross Town House where witches were tried before being sentenced to be burned at the stake. Outside the Town House we see a statue of Admiral Cochrane and learn how, having been brought up in Culross, he went on to become one of the Royal Navy's most famous Admirals. We also visit the "Study" and learn of its fascinating history before going up the hill to see Culross Abbey and "The House with the Evil Eyes".
