Exhibition Display For Sarasota International Airport

The Caledonian Club of South West Florida commissioned Visible Means
to design a new exhibition at Sarasota International Airport. The aim of the exhibit is to show
the strong links that exist between the Scots and the people of South West Florida.
The exhibition will be officially opened in April, during Tartan Week 2009.

Club President, Pauline Mitchell said, “The members of the Caledonian Club want the people of
South West Florida to be proud of our Scottish roots and this exhibit gets that message across. We are delighted
with Visible Means’ design and David’s photography has made such an impact on the visual presentation.”

The display includes seven iconic images of Scotland including Dunfermline Abbey, the Forth Rail Bridge,
the birthplace of Robert Burns and the Clubhouse of the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews. The text includes references to
famous Scottish figures such King Robert the Bruce,Robert Burns and Andrew Carnegie as well as Sarasota’s first
Mayor John Hamilton Gillespie, who built the first golf course in Sarasota in 1904.

The main photograph shows the Wallace Monument. Underneath there is a passage translated from the
Latin of Bower’s Scotichronicon circa 1440’s:“This is the truth I tell you, of all things, freedom’s most fine.
Never submit to live, my son, in the bonds of slavery entwined.” This is purported to be the proverb given to
William Wallace by his Uncle and was to be used centuries later in 1793 by Robert Burns in
his poem “Scots wha hae wi’ Wallace bled”.
